Taiwanese craft is once again taking part in the UK’s largest celebration of craft culture, which takes over London for one week every year.

Transcending Boundaries: Contemporary Lacquer Art & Metalwork in Taiwan

A new generation of innovative Taiwanese craftspeople are redefining the essence of craft in Taiwanese society, breaking the stereotype that craft was a traditional practice exclusively for legendary masters. Not only are they revitalizing the design and process of craft making, but also facilitating it to be a functional and practical part of contemporary life in Taiwan. Whilst their skills remain faithful to their predecessors, these young Taiwanese craft makers are experimenting with new media and forms, allowing them to explore the functionality of craft and fill their works with personality that expresses their unique life philosophies.

In order to highlight how young Taiwanese craftspeople are challenging the ordinary and embodying their creativity and artistic philosophies in the worlds of lacquer art and metalwork, the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan is bringing the artworks of Yo-An Yi, Chi-Hong Lee and Ching-Chih Wu to be showcased in London Craft Week 2020. These three young craftspeople have been cultivated and supported by the National Taiwan Craft Research & Development Institute, with London Craft Week 2020 taking place between 30th September and 8th October.
