Taiwan Travelogue Shortlisted for the International Booker Prize

The International Booker Prize has announced its 2026 shortlist, and Taiwan Travelogue—written by Yang Shuang-zi and translated by Lin King—has made history as the first Taiwanese work to earn a spot. It also stands as the only Asian title on this year's list.

Set in 1930s Taiwan, the novel explores the complex, enchanting, and heartbreaking relationship between a young Japanese author, Aoyama, and her Taiwanese companion, Chi-chan. The Booker Prize judges praised the book as "an insightful post-colonial novel that reads like a delicious romance." They especially highlighted its clever use of classic memoir formatting—introductions, afterwords, and a fourth-wall-breaking easter egg—warning readers: "Don’t skip the footnotes!"

Taiwan Travelogue's journey to the global stage was heavily supported by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture (MOC), which provided both the initial creative writing grant and the subsequent translation grant. Inspired by this international success, Minister of Culture Li Yuan recently expanded the government's support system, introducing an age-unrestricted "Literary Creation Grant" and other cross-disciplinary initiatives to continue nurturing Taiwanese literary talent.

The winner of the 2026 International Booker Prize will be announced on May 19 at London's Tate Modern. Currently, the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK is planning to invite Yang Shuang-zi and Lin King to tour various parts of the UK later this year. They will host a series of literary lectures and book signings, looking forward to meeting readers across the UK and showcasing the charm of Taiwanese literature.

《臺灣漫遊錄》入圍英國國際布克獎決選名單

英國國際布克獎宣布 2026 國際布克獎的決選名單，楊双子著、金翎英譯的《臺灣漫遊錄》持續獲得評審青睞，獲選為決選名單6部作品之一。文化部表示，這是臺灣首度入圍國際布克獎的決選名單，同時也是今年決選名單中唯一的亞洲作家作品，文化部長李遠除於第一時間向楊双子表達恭喜之意，更感謝她以文學持續讓世界看見臺灣。

文化部說明，英國國際布克獎首屆於2005年頒發，前身為曼布克國際獎 (Man Booker International Prize)，自2016年起每年頒獎予1部英文翻譯作品，臺灣作家吳明益的《單車失竊記》曾於2018年入圍初選名單。《臺灣漫遊錄》於2020年出版後，於2021年獲得金鼎獎圖書類文學圖書獎，英文版更於2024年獲得象徵美國文學最高榮譽的美國國家圖書獎 (National Book Awards) 翻譯文學大獎，英國版於2026年3月由And Other Stories出版。

國際布克獎評審形容《臺灣漫遊錄》，「是一部富有洞見的後殖民小說，讀起來卻像一段酸甜動人的浪漫故事」。評審指出，這本小說巧妙利用翻譯回憶錄的常見格式，包含導論、註腳與後記，為核心故事增添令人驚喜的層次感，更埋藏了一個打破「第四面牆」的劇情彩蛋，「千萬別跳過註腳」。《臺灣漫遊錄》以兩位女性主角之間的關係複雜、迷人且同樣令人心碎，優美地探討在先天權力不對等的關係中，愛與友誼所面臨的種種挑戰。評審說，青山千鶴子這位在1930年代敘述這段「漫遊錄」的年輕日本作家雖然心懷善意，但在她遊歷臺灣、狼吞虎嚥地吸收在地美食與文化時，那種微妙的（文化）尷尬感，卻讓人感同身受的有些坐立難安。而在故事發生多年後的虛構後記中，青山千鶴子的女兒轉述了一段她與母親關於一件「和服」的對話，聽起來似乎平淡無奇，但那一刻帶來的衝擊卻是安靜而毀滅性的。雖然這是一部虛構作品，「但在面對重重限制下如何說好故事的挑戰，《臺灣漫遊錄》給出了一個天才般的解方」。

文化部指出，楊双子曾經公開表示，《臺灣漫遊錄》是因為獲得文化部「青年創作補助」而完成，之後又因為文化部的英文外譯補助而得以走向世界。她也是第一位進入臺灣文學基地的駐村作家，之後也由文化部安排至世界各地巡迴演講、推廣文學。從拿到文化部第一次的補助到透過翻譯，在世界發光發熱，足足經過7、8年的時間。所以楊双子不止一次向同樣是作家的文化部長李遠提出的許多建言，希望文化部能夠提供更多、更多長遠的支援系統，長期培養臺灣年輕一輩的創作者。李遠也深深了解由政府部門長期的支持創作者的重要性，因此這一年來將青年創作獎勵修改為不限年齡的「文學創作獎勵」，同時推出更多對創作者的獎勵及跨域計畫，例如「得獎者下一本書獎勵」、「流浪計畫」、「文學改編媒合計畫」、「臺灣作家節」等。

文化部表示，2026年國際布克獎將於5月19日於倫敦泰特當代美術館舉行頒獎典禮，獲獎作品將可獲得5萬英鎊的獎金。目前文化部駐英國代表處文化組也正在籌劃邀請作者楊双子及譯者金翎於今年前往英國各地，舉辦系列巡迴文學講座與簽書會，期待與全英讀者見面，展現臺灣文學作品的魅力。
