BFI ‘Myriad Voices: Reframing Taiwan New Cinema’

Co-organized by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture and the British Film Institute (BFI), "Myriad Voices: Reframing Taiwan New Cinema" took place at BFI Southbank in London.

The Taiwanese season featured 15 films across 30 screenings, aiming to paint a fuller picture of this vibrant film movement and shift the spotlight towards lesser known but vital contributors, whose work helped shape this new cinematic expression. It screened several works by renowned directors such as Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), Edward Yang (楊德昌), Wang Toon (王童), Wan Jen (萬仁), Chang Yi (張毅), Chen Kun-hou (陳坤厚), and Huang Yu-shan (黃玉珊).

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the U.K. highlighted that this collaboration with BFI marks a significant milestone and reflects their commitment to fostering cultural exchange by enhancing appreciation of Taiwanese cinema. Additionally, Taiwanese film directors, Chen Kun-hou and Huang Yu-shan attended select screenings to share their insights on Taiwan New Cinema.

On Apr. 11, "The Boys from Fengkuei (風櫃來的人),” directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien (侯孝賢), was screened with an introduction by Chen Kun-hou, who served as the film's cinematographer. Chen shared how his long-standing collaboration with Hou enabled them to capture their favorite scenes in the film. He expressed hope that U.K. audiences would experience Taiwan's culture and landscapes through the film and be inspired to visit Taiwan.

On Apr. 12, Huang Yu-shan attended the "Taiwan New Cinema Symposium," where she shared her insights on the Taiwan New Cinema movement and discussed her work in the Taiwanese film industry during the 1980s. Speaking from a female perspective, she highlighted how the once-suppressed voices of women gradually found expression through female characters in Taiwan New Cinema and the portrayal of their emotional worlds.
