Drifting Sound: Echoes Across Tides - Dungi Sapor's UK Tour

Drifting Sound: Echoes Across Tides - Dungi Sapor's UK Tour Electronic Beats Meet Indigenous Sounds

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in the UK, in partnership with Kakilang—a prominent UK arts organization dedicated to celebrating East and Southeast Asian cultural voices—presents the UK tour of trailblazing Amis Indigenous electronic artist DJ Dungi Sapor. Running from June 19 to 24 under the title Drifting Sound: Echoes Across Tides, the multi-city tour showcases a vibrant fusion of contemporary electronic music and traditional Taiwanese Indigenous heritage.

As Taiwan’s first female Indigenous DJ, Dungi Sapor has garnered widespread acclaim for her unique ability to weave modern electronic beats with ancient chants and traditional rhythms, creating a powerful artistic bridge between past and present. For this UK tour, she is joined on stage by Indigenous dancers Wang Sheng-chin and Lu Chih-chi. Seamlessly blending live vocal invocations, high-energy electronic sets, and traditional choreography, the performances actively engage the audience, offering British music lovers an immersive window into Taiwan’s rich and diverse cultural landscape.

The tour launched on June 19 in Sheffield, where Dungi Sapor delivered a headline performance for the opening night party of the renowned Migration Matters Festival. The momentum carried into Bristol on June 20 with a packed show at the independent music venue The Jam Jar. In a nod to cross-cultural exchange, the Bristol performance collaborated with local non-profit music platform Wildtune, featuring opening sets from Southeast Asian DJs Izzi and TIRTA, creating a dynamic dialogue between diverse Asian electronic music styles.

The tour will culminate with two major events in London. On June 23, the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, will host a specialized "listening session" moderated by Dr. Cường Minh Bá Phạm, a music scholar from the University of Birmingham. The session invites participants to analyze contemporary music through the dual lenses of diaspora and Taiwanese Indigenous identities, exploring how sound carries memory and cultural knowledge across borders.

The final tour performance will take place on June 24 at London’s Paper Dress Vintage. Again partnering with Wildtune, the closing event will feature opening sets by Taiwanese-born DJ Auntie Klockwise and the East Asian DJ duo ZEE-2.

This tour offers an incredible platform to introduce British audiences to the depth of Taiwan's contemporary electronic music scene. By harmonizing the modern with the traditional, these performances do more than entertain—they showcase the distinct identity of our Indigenous communities and the pluralistic beauty of Taiwanese culture. Furthermore, the collaborative curation of listening sessions and local opening acts has fostered deep, meaningful interactions between the artists and the UK public.
