Open call for the 3rd Hengshan Calligraphy Award

The 3rd Hengshan Calligraphy Award Opens for International Applications

Taoyuan Museum of Fine Arts (TMoFA) will open online applications for the Third Hengshan Calligraphy Award from 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, November 30, 2026, Taiwan time. This edition of the Hengshan Calligraphy Award invites proposals for calligraphic art exhibitions or artistic presentations that use all gallery spaces of Hengshan Calligraphy Art Center(HCAC). Artists, curators, and creative teams are invited to propose innovative, timely, and experimental calligraphic art exhibition plans from contemporary perspectives.

Since its establishment, the Hengshan Calligraphy Award has been dedicated to encouraging calligraphic art curation and artistic presentation with pioneering perspectives. Through exhibition-based practices, the Award seeks to connect diverse cultural traditions, media technologies, and contemporary issues, further expanding the many dimensions of calligraphy in today’s art field. TMoFA Director Lin Yung-neng noted that calligraphy is not only a continuation of traditional writing practices, but can also enter into new dialogues with moving image, installation, performance, technology, and interdisciplinary creation, while responding to the issues facing today’s world. The Hengshan Calligraphy Award aims to support these forward-looking practices and help calligraphy continue to generate new possibilities in the contemporary era.

Director Lin further stated that, in order to better align the Award system with its founding purpose, the Third Hengshan Calligraphy Award will simplify its application procedure and expand the scope of submissions. Unlike previous editions, this edition will directly invite proposals that use all gallery spaces of HCAC, allowing participants to consider exhibition narrative, spatial arrangement, and audience experience in a more comprehensive way. At the same time, the Award will become an international open call, with no restriction on nationality. Both individuals and groups are eligible to apply. Through this more open call for proposals, the Award looks forward to bringing together diverse perspectives from Taiwan and the international field of calligraphic art.

To encourage outstanding curatorial practices and calligraphic art presentations, this edition of the Hengshan Calligraphy Award introduces a new cash award system. The winner will receive a cash award of NT$300,000. Within three years after the announcement of the winning proposal, TMoFA will commission the winner to present a new full-gallery exhibition at HCAC based on the winning proposal. TMoFA will also provide exhibition funding of up to NT$2,000,000. If the winner resides outside Taiwan, TMoFA will provide airfare subsidies during the production and opening periods of the new exhibition. In addition, each finalist will receive a cash award of NT$30,000.
