In the Mist & Traversing the Mist | Fierce Festival 2026

As part of #QueerEast Festival, Taiwanese filmmaker/artist Chou Tung-Yen brings two works from his award-winning “Trilogy of Mist” to Fierce Festival 2026 in Birmingham: In the Mist and Traversing the Mist.

Set within a surreal gay sauna, both VR works explore desire, intimacy, memory and connection. 𝘐𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘵 (2020) invites audiences into a solitary journey through shifting spaces of gaze and recognition, while 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘵 (2024) expands the experience into a shared virtual world, where participants inhabit identical avatars and encounter one another through a landscape shaped by longing and intimacy.

Together, the works ask how virtual space can create new forms of human encounter, and how technology might reshape the ways we see ourselves and one another.
